11-vessel order with DMS Maritime culminates in Rescue Gear Ship for the Royal Australian Navy

29 Nov 2012

An 11-vessel order for DMS Maritime Pty Limited culminated recently with a Rescue Gear Ship 9316, which will be used to support the Royal Australian Navy’s submarine fleet. Damen Shipyards and DMS Maritime signed the contract for the RGS 9316 on November 16 in Sydney, Australia. The vessel will be built at a Damen yard in Vietnam and is due to be delivered in 2016. Having built a similar vessel, the SD Victoria for Serco UK supporting the Royal Navy, the RGS 9316 is based on a proven Damen concept.
  • Since 2011, DMS Maritime has ordered five tugboats (four Azimuth tugs - a Damen ASD Tug 2310, an ASD Tug 2009 and two ASD 2411s) as well as a Stan Tug 1606 for Rockingham, Darwin and Sydney and four water fuel lighters (due for delivery in 2013/14). Four of the five tugs have been delivered. The ASD Tug 2009 will be delivered mid-2013.

As well as this, a contract for an Escape Gear Ship 8316 Submarine Rescue Vessel was signed in August. This ship will be delivered in 2015.

  • Based in Sydney, DMS Maritime is part of the international service company Serco, which works with governments worldwide. Under the Fleet Marine Services Contract for the Royal Australian Navy DMS Maritime operates a fleet of around seventy-five vessels on Navy’s behalf.
  • On time, in budget

  • Roland Briene, Damen Regional Sales Director – Asia Pacific, comments: “This really is a remarkable project. After working on this contract for more than three years, we are proud to say that all the vessels so far have been delivered ahead of schedule and in budget to the full satisfaction of the client.”
Previously, Damen had worked extensively with Serco in the UK on a 29-vessel order completed in 2010. “We took the lessons we all learnt onboard for this contract. For instance, rather than having five project managers we have one to make sure all communications are streamlined efficiently. This is also the first regular contact Damen has had with the Royal Australian Navy and we hope that this positive experience means that the Navy will consider Damen in the future.”

  • He adds: “We started talks in 2007 but ultimately I think DMS Maritime chose Damen because of our ability to have all of the different types of vessels under one form of contract. During the tendering process we were able to get together with our product groups and give a very fast response and support DMS throughout the entire tender process with our project engineers, research and finance people. We could show that we have proven designs and a track record for on time delivery, in budget.”
  • Training

Damen is also responsible for delivering all 11 vessels to Australia and carrying out the initial training and introduction into service. The services will be carried out by Damen Australia.

BAE Systems Awarded $80 Mln U.S. Navy Contract For Two Advanced Gun Systems

Advanced Gun System (AGS)

BAE Systems has received an $80.3 million modification contract award from the U.S. Navy to deliver two Advanced Gun Systems (AGS) for the latest in the Zumwalt class destroyer fleet, the DDG 1002.
This contract marks the third destroyer to receive AGS applications and brings the total funding of the initial contract for this ship, first awarded in October 2011, to $149 million.
“This contract demonstrates the progress made on the DDG 1000 program with the integration of AGS technology onto now a third DDG 1000 destroyer,” said Dave Johnson, director of the DDG 1000 program for BAE Systems. “The AGS is critical in supporting the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps’ expeditionary and joint operations against a wide range of littoral and deep inland targets.”
The AGS is a 155mm, vertically loaded gun mount that is capable of storing, programming and firing the Long Range Land Attack Projectile (LRLAP). It is a fully automated weapon system that can fire 10 rounds per minute with ranges greater than 60 nautical miles.
The AGS rounds are drawn from a fully-automated, below-deck weapon handling and storage system holding up to 300 rounds. By eliminating the need for personnel in the magazine, the AGS design supports the U.S. Navy's goals to significantly reduce overall crew requirements and increase crew safety.
To date, BAE Systems has designed, built and integrated four AGS for the first two DDG 1000 destroyers in the Zumwalt class fleet. Work under this contract will be performed at BAE Systems’ Louisville, Kentucky and Cordova, Alabama facilities, and is expected to be completed by January 2018.

Royal Navy's 847 Squadron returns from USA trained and ready to fight

After a gruelling month-long training package in the hot and arid deserts of California, 847 Naval Air Squadron personnel, along with their Lynx Mk9A aircraft, have made the 6,000-mile (9,700km) return journey to RNAS Yeovilton in Somerset.

Corporal Rob Hughes

Why did 847 Naval Air Squadron go all the way to the US Naval Air Facility at El Centro in California? Well, it replicates many of the climatic and geographical features that the squadron will encounter in Helmand province, Afghanistan, and provides excellent value in terms of training.
Like El Centro, the base at Camp Bastion is high above sea level and the air can be extremely hot and dusty in the summer and also extremely cold when operating in the mountainous regions in the winter.
The locality in which the Lynx Mk9A helicopter will be operating will no doubt challenge both aircrew and ground crew alike, from the battle-hardened helicopter instructors to, in particular, the inexperienced aviators and engineers.
El Centro also provided easy access to a number of outstanding firing ranges, unlike anything available in the UK, where the air door gunners were able to hone their airborne gunnery skills with the 0.5-inch (12.7mm) M3M Browning machine gun, a weapon that has a long range, very good accuracy, and uses a variety of multi-role ammunition.

The squadron also managed to squeeze in some mutual training with 45 Commando Royal Marines who were also conducting pre-deployment training at the base.
However, it was not all about work. A very welcome fringe benefit of operating at El Centro is its close proximity to San Diego which proved to be an excellent run ashore and enabled all to recharge some very weary batteries.
Returning the aircraft and support equipment to the UK proved to be a challenge for the squadron engineers.
Fitting all four aircraft into the hold of the Antonov 124 looked to be an extremely difficult and daunting task, but with considerable precision and skill they managed to gently manoeuvre their treasured aircraft into the available space.

Lieutenant Commander Spence, a Senior Pilot in 847 Naval Air Squadron, said:
"The training in the USA has now provided the squadron with the essential fighting skills required when they deploy to Afghanistan in January 2013 and we have all appreciated the quality of the training that El Centro provided.
"The challenging conditions at the base tested many of the Junglies' skills and, from an aircrew perspective, were able to understand how they and their aircraft performed in the intense hot and dusty environment."

Standard Missile

Standard Missile Raytheon's evoloving technology to strengthen the ballistic missile defense of the U.S. and its Allies
Standard Missile, which first entered production in 1967 as SM-1, was developed as a replacement for the Terrier, Talos and Tartar surface-to-air missiles. For 50 years, Standard Missile technology has evolved from that beginning to keep pace with new threats and growing missions.
On September 17, 2009, President Barack Obama announced the U.S. decision to adopt a new approach to ballistic missile defense in Europe. This plan, called the European Phased Adaptive Approach (EPAA), uses Raytheon's Standard Missile-3 as a proven cost-effective way to protect our NATO allies and U.S. forces stationed in Europe against ballistic-missile threats. Raytheon is developing multiple variants of SM-3™ (Blocks IA, IB and IIA) as part of the Missile Defense Agency's sea-based Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense (BMD) System.
Phase 1 in 2011 included the deployment of existing Aegis BMD-capable ships equipped with proven SM-3 Block IA interceptors. In March 2011, the United States sent the USS Monterey to the Mediterranean Sea to begin a sustained deployment of Aegis BMD-capable ships in support of the EPAA.
Standard Missile Chart
Phase 2 in 2015 will employ the more advanced Block IB version of the SM-3 interceptor. Block IB maintains the reliability of the Block IA variant while incorporating a new two-color infrared seeker, an advanced signal processor and a new Throttleable Divert and Attitude Control System (TDACS), providing the precision propulsion necessary to intercept incoming ballistic missiles with pinpoint accuracy.
In May 2012, Raytheon achieved a significant milestone with the successful flight test of SM-3 Block IB, marking the 20th successful SM-3 intercept. During the test, the target launched from the Pacific Missile Range Facility on the island of Kauai. TheUSS Lake Erie's SPY-1 radar acquired and began tracking the target. Several minutes after target launch, the ship's crew fired an SM-3 Block IB. During flight, the missile's kinetic warhead acquired the target with its two-color infrared seeker and tracked it through intercept. Commonly referred to as "hitting a bullet with a bullet," the SM-3 is designed to destroy incoming threat missiles by colliding with them. This collision's kinetic energy was the equivalent of a 10-ton truck traveling at 600 miles per hour.
For Phase 3 in 2018, a significantly more advanced SM-3 Block IIA interceptor is being jointly developed by Raytheon and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) in Nagoya, Japan. The partnership began with a 1999 agreement among the Government of Japan, the U.S. Missile Defense Agency, Raytheon and MHI to operate as an integrated team to develop Block IIA. Japan already deploys Block IA on its Kongo-class destroyers.
MHI will provide Block IIA's bigger second- and third-stage rocket motors. Raytheon will furnish the advanced kinetic warhead, which combines larger seeker optics, a 512 x 512 focal-plane array and an advanced signal processor to improve both clutter discrimination and target-acquisition range. These enhancements will enable a single ship to defend a wider region and destroy a broader range of ballistic missile threats.
SM-3 continues to evolve as a critical resource in the ballistic missile defense of the U.S. and our allies as it counters increasingly sophisticated threats.
