March 21, 2015 - Members of NUSHIP Adelaide's ship’s company were recently introduced to an amazing and inspiring replica of their ship constructed entirely out of Lego!
The epic model of NUSHIP Adelaide was a result of the creative mind of Mr David Low, a Lego enthusiast, who constructed the model over a two month period using only what he could source from pictures and drawings available on the internet. A result of his patience and some 7,000 Lego blocks, was a 2.5 metre 1:72 scale model of the Landing Helicopter Dock.
Mr Low's motivation for the model was to do something different, challenging and out of the box for "Brickvention", a two-day event that brings together Lego model makers and collectors from all over the country which this year was held in Melbourne in late January.
"My creations are normally only aircraft and smaller scale models of other items but I was motivated to do something else that would challenge me and stand out from crowd," he said.
The Lego version was built in ‘blocks’ much similar to the approach taken by ship builder Navantia in Spain on the real thing and Mr Low also uses the approach to transport the model around to various events.
"The biggest challenge was to find and acquire so many 'ship-side grey' blocks in the right shapes to make up the ship and to accurately recreate hatches, doors and deck markings!" Mr Low said.

On hand to cast an eye over the model was Executive Officer NUSHIP Adelaide Commander Brendon Zilko and Engineering Officer Commander Gustaaf Nord-Thomson who were suitably impressed with the model of their ship.
NUSHIP Adelaide is the second Landing Helicopter Dock under constuction for the Royal Australian Navy at the BAE Williamstown facility in Melbourne, Victoria.  Her sister ship, HMAS Canberra, is currently undergoing helicopter trials to prepare her for future deployments
